George Orwells 1984 Essay Many great novels have been written on many different topics, George Orwells 1984 is no exception to this. This novel takes place in a country called Oceania; it is what is left of a destroyed London city, in 1984. There are only three continents according to the book, Oceania, Eurasia and Eastasia. These three countries are always at war that is why most of them are described to be in ruins. Oceania is controlled by a government called Big Brother.. Big Brother has taken total control of everybody’s mind, regulating the minds of all the smart people to perform just like the not-so-smart people. Everything that a person does is watched and controlled by this government. It has gone to the point where people are not even allowed to have a diary, or even enjoy sex. To add to it all the government has re written history making it the way they want it to be, sometimes totally erasing it. There is one man who is destined to fight against this government; he is Winston Smith the main character of the novel. Throughout the story we notice that this novel is clearly based on the conflict of Man vs. Society, I believe I can explain this to us. In this form of government opposite sexes are not to enjoy sex but to do it just for breeding purposes. Big Brother believes that sex stimulates the mind and opens the door to different thoughts, thoughts of rebellion and enjoyment. Winston meets a girl by the name of Julia at a glass store, the next day she tells him that she is in love with him. Winston agrees to meet with the girl at a certain location and they have sex. This really breaks the ice for them as a result they begin to tell each other their thoughts without worrying about the thought police. They tell each other how much they dislike Big Brother and how they wish they knew the real past. They both know that this is a serious crime but neither one of them seems to care. One of the worst laws in Big Brother is to keep some sort of journal or diary, but Winston doesnt seem to care. He strategically finds a spot in his apartment where the telescreen cannot see him and he is able to write a journal. He writes all his thoughts and fears about everything that is a part of his life, because of this he is always paranoid about somebody figuring out that he is against the government. This really helps him out to deal with what is going on in his life, he thinks of the journal as his best friend, the only thing he can really trust. He knows that he is probably the only person that keeps a journal and that if he got caught he would be vanished from existence. Yet he does this rebellious thing against all society every day. When a so-called friend tells Winston that there is an underground club for people that believe in the same thins he does, without thinking twice he joins. He feels honored that there are more people that believe in individuality like he does. This is a source of comfort to him; he gets really interested that he evens read an entire book in a really short period of time written by the founder of the club. This is eventually what gets Winston caught by the thought police, it turns out to be a set up to catch people like Winston. This has been a very intriguing novel to read. It has dealt with every kind of conflict that could be categorized under Man vs. Society. George Orwell tells a story where the government becomes so strong that they begin to dominate everything even the mind. This novel shows the meaning of being an individual and what it means to each individual himself. This novel will be long time classic, just because it deals with such odd forms of Man vs. Society.

Throughout American History, Afro-Americans Have Had To Decide Essays

Throughout American history, Afro-Americans have had to decide whether they belonged in the United States or if they should go elsewhere. Slavery no doubtfully had a great impact upon their decisions. However, despite their troubles African Americans have made a grand contribution and a great impact on our armed forces since the Revolutionary War. The Afro-American has fought against its country's wars, and they have also fought the war within their country to gain the right to fight and freedom. America's first war, its war for independence from Great Britain was a great accomplishment. This achievement could not have been performed if not for the black soldiers in the armies. "The first American to shed blood in the revolution that freed America from British rule was Crispus Attucks, a Black seaman." (Mullen 9) Attucks along with four white men were killed in the Boston Massacre of March 5, 1770. Even though Attucks was a fugitive slave running from his master, he was still willing to fight against England along with other whites and give the ultimate sacrifice, his life, for freedom. This wasn't the only incident of Blacks giving it all during the War for Independence. From the first battles of Concord and Lexington in 1775, Black soldiers "took up arms against the mother country." (Mullen 11) Of the many Black men who fought in those battles, the most famous are Peter Salem, Cato Stedman, Cuff Whittemore, Cato Wood, Prince Estabrook, Caesar Ferritt, Samuel Craft, Lemuel Haynes, and Pomp Blackman. One of the most distinguished heroes o the Battle of Bunker Hill was Peter Salem who, according to some sources, fired the shot that killed Major John Pitcairn of the Royal Marines. But Peter Salem wasn't the only Black hero during the Revolutionary War. Another Black man, Salem Poor, also made a hero of himself at Bunker Hill. Because of his bravery at the battle, he was commended by several officers to the Continental Congress. "Equally gallant at Bunker Hill were Pomp Fisk, Grant Coope, Charleston Eads, Seymour Burr, Titus Coburn, Cuff Hayes, and Caesar Dickenson." (Wilson 32) Of these men, Caesar Brown and Cuff Hayes were killed during the battle. Even though the Afro-American soldiers clearly distinguished themselves as soldiers, they were by no means wanted in the army. "Shortly after General Washington took command of the Army, the white colonists decided that not only should no Black slaves or freemen be enlisted, but that those already serving in the Army should be dismissed." (Mullen 12) The colonists would probably have kept Blacks out of the military during the war if not for the proclamation by the Lord of Dunmore. He stated "I do hereby... declare all... Negroes... free, that are able and willing to bear arms, they joining his Majesty's troops, as soon as may be, for the more speedily reducing this colony to a proper dignity." This meant that any black soldiers willing to fight for the British would be declared legally free. Therefore, the Americans couldn't afford to deny Black Americans, free or not, from joining the army. Less than a month following Lord Dunmore's proclamation, General George Washington officially reversed his policy about letting "free Negroes to enlist." (Fowler 21) "Of the 300,000 soldiers who served in the Continental Army during the War of Independence, approximately five thousand were Black. Some volunteered. Others were drafted. In addition to several all-Black companies, an all-Black regiment was recruited from Rhode Island. This regiment distinguished itself in the Battle of Rhode Island on August 29, 1778." (Wilson 22) Between 1775 to 1781 there weren't any battles without Black participants. Black soldiers fought for the colonies at Lexington, Concord, Ticonderoga, White Plains, Benington, Brandywine, Saratoga, Savannah, and Yorktown. There were two Blacks, Prince Whipple and Oliver Cromwell, with Washington when he crossed the Delaware River on Christmas Day in 1776. "Some won recognition and a place in the history of the War of Independence by their outstanding service, although most have remained anonymous." (Craine 43) Unfortunately despite Afro-Americans' contributions to the war effort and the large amount of dead Blacks, few had gained their freedom. The War for Independence was just the first of a list of wars Afro-Americans would have a chance to participate in. The second American war fought with Afro-American help was the War of 1812. As Martin Delany put it, the Afro-American were "as ready and as willing to volunteer in your service as any other... and Blacks were not compelled to go; they were not draughted. Make Hot Ice From Vinegar and Baking Soda Sodium acetate or hot ice is an amazing chemical you can prepare yourself from baking soda and vinegar. You can cool a solution of sodium acetate below its melting point and then cause the liquid to crystallize. The crystallization is an exothermic process, so the resulting ice is hot. Sodium Acetate or Hot Ice Materials 1-liter clear vinegar (weak acetic acid)4 tablespoons baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) Prepare the Sodium Acetate or Hot Ice In a saucepan or large beaker, add baking soda to the vinegar, a little at a time and stirring between additions. The baking soda and vinegar react to form sodium acetate and carbon dioxide gas. If you dont add the baking soda slowly, youll essentially get a baking soda and vinegar volcano, which would overflow your container. Youve made the sodium acetate, but it is too dilute to be very useful, so you need to remove most of the water. Here is the reaction between the baking soda and vinegar to produce the sodium acetate: Na[HCO3]– CH3–COOH → CH3–COO– Na H2O CO2Boil the solution to concentrate the sodium acetate. You could just remove the solution from heat once you have 100-150 ml of solution remaining, but the easiest way to get good results is to simply boil the solution until a crystal skin or film starts to form on the surface. This took me about an hour on the stove over medium heat. If you use lower heat you are less likely to get yellow or brown liquid, but it will take longer. If discoloration occurs, its okay. Once you remove the sodium acetate solution from heat, immediately cover it to prevent any further evaporation. I poured my solution into a separate container and covered it with plastic wrap. You should not have any crystals in your solution. If you do have crystals, stir a very small amount of water or vinegar into the solution, just sufficient to dissolve the crystals.Place the covered container of sodium acetate solution in the refrigerator to chill. Activities Involving Hot Ice The sodium acetate in the solution in the refrigerator is an example of a supercooled liquid. That is, the sodium acetate exists in liquid form below its usual melting point. You can initiate crystallization by adding a small crystal of sodium acetate or possibly even by touching the surface of the sodium acetate solution with a spoon or finger. The crystallization is an example of an exothermic process. Heat is released as the ice forms. To demonstrate supercooling, crystallization, and heat release you could: Drop a crystal into the container of cooled sodium acetate solution. The sodium acetate will crystallize within seconds, working outward from where you added the crystal. The crystal acts as a nucleation site or seed for rapid crystal growth. Although the solution just came out of the refrigerator, if you touch the container you will find it is now warm or hot.Pour the solution onto a shallow dish. If the hot ice does not spontaneously begin crystallization, you can touch it with a crystal of sodium acetate (you can usually scrape a small amount of sodium acetate from the side of the container you used earlier). The crystallization will progress from the dish up toward where you are pouring the liquid. You can construct towers of hot ice. The towers will be warm to the touch.You can re-melt sodium acetate and re-use it for demonstrations. Hot Ice Safety As you would expect, sodium acetate is a safe chemical for use in demonstrations. To take a breath in, the external intercostal muscles contract, moving the ribcage up and out. The diaphragm moves down at the same time, creating negative pressure within the thorax. The lungs are held to the thoracic wall by the pleural membranes, and so expand outwards as well. This creates negative pressure within the lungs, and so air rushes in through the upper and lower airways.Expiration is mainly due to the natural elasticity of the lungs, which tend to collapse if they are not held against the thoracic wall. This is the mechanism behind lung collapse if there is air in the pleural space (pneumothorax) Each branch of the bronchial tree eventually sub-divides to form very narrow terminal bronchioles, which terminate in the alveoli. There are many millions of alveloi in each lung, and these are the areas responsible for gaseous exchange, presenting a massive surface area for exchange to occur over.Each alveolus is very closely associated with a network of capillaries containing deoxygenated blood from the pulmonary artery. The capillary and alveolar walls are very thin, allowing rapid exchange of gases by passive diffusion along concentration gradients. CO2 moves into the alveolus as the concentration is much lower in the alveolus than in the blood, and O2 moves out of the alveolus as the continuous flow of blood through the capillaries prevents saturation of the blood with O2 and allows maximal transfer across the membrane. Asthma is a condition that affects the airways – the small tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs. When a person with asthma comes into contact with something that irritates their airways (an asthma trigger), the muscles round the walls of the airways tighten so that the airways become narrower and the lining of the airways becomes inflamed and starts to swell. Sometimes, sticky m ucus or phlegm builds up, which can further narrow the airways. These reactions cause the airways to become narrower and irritated – making it difficult to breath and leading to symptoms of asthma. Asthma is a long-term condition  that can cause a cough, wheezing and breathlessness. The severity of the symptoms varies from person to person. Asthma can be controlled well in most people most of the time. In the UK, 5. million people are currently receiving treatment for asthma. That  is  1 in every 12 adults and 1 in every 11 children. Asthma in adults is more common in women than men. If you are diagnosed with asthma as a child, the  symptoms may disappear during your teenage years. However, asthma can return in adulthood. If childhood symptoms of asthma are moderate to severe, it is more likely that the condition will persist or return later in life. However, asthma does not only start in  young people and can develop at any age. The cause of asthma is not fully und erstood, but it is known that asthma often runs in families.You are more likely to have asthma if one or both of your parents  has the condition. What is asthma? Asthma is caused by inflammation of the airways. These are  the small tubes, called bronchi,  which carry air in and out of the lungs. If you have asthma, the bronchi  will be  inflamed and  more sensitive than normal. When you come into contact with something that irritates your lungs, known as a trigger, your airways become narrow, the muscles around them tighten and there is an increase in the production of sticky mucus (phlegm). This makes it difficult to breathe and causes wheezing and coughing.It  may also  make your chest feel tight. A severe onset of symptoms is known as an asthma attack or an ‘acute asthma exacerbation'. Asthma attacks may require hospital treatment and can sometimes be life-threatening, although this is rare. For some people with chronic (long-lasting) asthma, long-term infla mmation of the airways may lead to more permanent narrowing. Common triggers A trigger is  anything that irritates the airways and brings on the symptoms of asthma. These differ from person to person and people with asthma may have several triggers.Common triggers include house dust mites, animal fur, pollen, tobacco smoke, exercise, cold air and chest infections. Other types of asthma There are  other types of asthma that can be made worse by certain activities: * Work-aggravated asthma is pre-existing asthma that is made worse by dust and fumes at work. * Occupational asthma is caused by exposure to specific substances at work. For example, some nurses develop occupational asthma after exposure to latex, and some workers in the food-processing industry develop occupational asthma as a response of exposure to flour. OutlookWhile there is no cure for asthma, symptoms can come and go throughout your life. A number of treatments can help control the condition very effectively. Reading and writing isn t and was never my thing in early education. Reading always intimidated me, it wasn t relaxing like a lot of people had told me. I could never find a good book that caught my interest and that I wanted to finish. I despised reading out loud in from of my classmates. My problem wasn t that I just disliked it, it was that I thought I was bad at it. I stumbled on words that seemed like everyone else knew. I was unconfident, unappreciative, and unmotivated when it came to reading and writing. In elementary I could never keep up with my peers in the reading and writing category. I accelerated among my classmates in math, but I still struggled to be at the same reading level as them. As my classmates moved on to the thin chapter books I was still trying to to get comfortable with what seemed like little kid books. I got so frustrated that I began to hate reading and along with that writing. Because of my struggles with reading it made me a poor writer when I moved i nto middle school. As I moved into middle school my hatred for reading remained the same. As my poor attitude about reading got worse my writing also became harder to complete. The essays with word counts started to become hard to reach, and began to seem almost impossible at times. The long nights of staring at a seemingly blank piece of paper that was supposed to contain an essay got tiring and repetitive.
